What Comes Next?
A student who has completed the Beast Academy series through Level 5D has the mathematical background necessary for Math 6: Prealgebra (Part 1). Like most of our math courses in levels 6-8, Math 6: Prealgebra (Part 1), is offered in two different tracks: Honors and Scholars. Learn about the difference between Honors and Scholars here.
Our Prealgebra instructors are particularly mindful of the fact that their students are often new to online courses and even to typing, so the Prealgebra classes are shorter and less aggressively-paced than our later classes.
Topic Overlap
If your student enrolls in Math 6: Prealgebra or uses our Prealgebra textbook, you may notice that some of the topics overlap with what they saw in Beast Academy Level 5. Beast Academy Level 5 leans towards developing students' computational fluency, while Math 6: Prealgebra and the AoPS Prealgebra textbook lean towards developing students' reasoning skills. With this in mind, Math 6: Prealgebra and the AoPS Prealgebra textbook are built around assuming that students know a lot of mathematical facts and that they know how to compute things well. In Math 6: Prealgebra, we push them to justify why the steps in their solutions are true. This helps students transition to deeper, more rigorous, and/or more abstract mathematical thinking in Math 7: Introduction to Algebra (or the Introduction to Algebra textbook) and beyond.
Even if a student finishing Beast Academy Level 5 can pass the post-test for Math 6: Prealgebra (Part 2), we do not recommend jumping straight from there to Math 7: Introduction to Algebra (Part 1). Students have the opportunity in Math 6: Prealgebra to go more in-depth with topics introduced in Beast Academy Level 5, while also exploring topics that are unique to our prealgebra course. Math 7: Introduction to Algebra (Part 1) requires a much bigger jump in depth, rigor, and mathematical sophistication from Level 5.
